About Us

Our Mission:

We are a network of peers and colleagues who investigate the principles of Population Coding — Perception to Action (Pop coding PA). Through discussion, collaboration, and public dissemination of our knowledge we aim to improve our own research and help drive forward this burgeoning field of Neuroscience.

What We Do:

Each of our members uses different disease models, calcium indicators, microscopes, and species, but we all share a common technique: calcium imaging of multiple neurons. Most of our members are measuring calcium activity using Genetically Encoded Calcium Indicators (GECIs) expressed in neurons and then performing multiphoton imaging with a laser scanning microscope or single-photon and high-speed cameras. We are examining tens to hundreds of neurons from the dish all the way to the awake behaving animals and asking questions about what this population level signaling means and what kinds of questions we can ask with this technique that have never before been within reach.

Training Opportunities:

We provide monthly meetings for trainees to present their data and receive both scientific critique and technical advice on their research. Each meeting will also provide a broad overview of a technical question about calcium imaging, analysis, or another aspect of this research and a group discussion will provide feedback on the topic. These discussions will be synthesized into a Technical Blog on the chosen topic which will be updated monthly for future reference and easy dissemination of the discussion to our peers.
